I Want To Make My Home Warmer

Many studies have proven that around 21-30% of heat lost is through windows. The reasoning for this appears to be that the warm air circulating and cooling as it comes in contact with the colder glass of the window.

By allowing the sun to enter your home during the day and in the early evening closing quality well installed and specified window treatments you can dramatically increase the retention of heat during the winter months.

Thermal rating and the "R" Value indicates the thermal efficiency of windows. The higher the R value the better the resistance and efficiency to retaining heat. Standard windows have an R value of around 0.9 – 3.0 and double glazing from 2.0 – 4.0.

The options below are the most effective window treatment solutions to make your home warmer.

Blockout Lined Curtains

Good curtains and roman blinds can aid in the retention of heat in your home. Energywise quote the reduction in heat loss by around 60% for single glazed windows, and 40-50% when you have double glazing. This of course only rings true if you have your curtains and blinds shut.

It is important to note the difference between thermal backed curtain fabric and a curtain that has a separate thermal lining. The coated curtain fabric commonly seen in readymades provides a level of protection but not to the extent that a separate lining would. Like double glazing the second layer of lining helps to create a air pocket between the lining and the curtain further reducing heat loss.

Honeycomb Blinds

Honeycomb Blinds have an R rating of around 2.0 - 4.0 dependent upon the fabric chosen. They are predominantly installed tight into the window reveal. Due to their specific design Honeycomb Blinds have minimal gaps around the edges. This is perfect for heat retention forming a tight seal between the blind and the window.

Not only do they form a great seal but their cellular design offers a further barrier of protection to ensure heat loss is kept to a minimum.
